Hailing all the way from Japan, Direct Impact is proof that reggae music is a worldwide phenomenon. ‘Slowly Surely’ Leo aka Jahvaneeze, one of the founding members of Direct Impact, was living in London at the time when he met Wayne, Clive, Mark, Rico to form the sound in 1994. They were heavily influenced by such UK luminaries as Mad Professor, Dennis Bovell, Jah Shaka, Aba Shanti-I.
After re-locating back to his homeland a few years later, Leo decided to continue pursuing his love of roots reggae culture by starting Direct Impact Japan along with his mates Tutoreal, Steady (RIP), Jahgodon and U-Gee-Dubudda. In their native country of Japan, Direct Impact has toured with the likes of Horace Andy, Ranking Joe, Stone Love, U Brown, Al Campbell, Zion Train, Iration Steppas, Aba Shanti-I, Mad Professor and Earl 16. They have so far released nine albums and continue to produce their unique take on roots reggae and dub music.
In 2011, after the Fukushima nuclear accident, Direct Impact started supporting anti-nuclear movements in Japan. They took active part in the anti-nuclear demonstrations on the streets of Tokyo by leading the parade with their soundsystem on a truck alongside the famous Japanese reggae singer Likkle Mai. The crew has performed at the UK One Love Festival several times and most recently at Wilkswood Reggae Festival in July.
